Why, God?

Several months ago as I was preparing to have surgery, I was lamenting the cost of medical procedures, even with health insurance. While discussing the high cost of health care with a friend who has also experienced costly hospital visits, she mentioned that she has reminded God that it would be much cheaper for Him to simply heal her! We’ve both asked God “why” He isn’t simply intervening in the miraculous ways we know that He’s capable of. In an instant, He could make me a mother. In an instant, He could heal my friend from chronic illness.
God reminded of a person who He did heal quickly. John 9 tells the story of the man born blind. What catches my attention is that people were asking Jesus “why.”
“Why was this man born blind? Is it the fault of his sin or his parents sin?”
Jesus’ simple answer is that this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in the man’s life.

My husband and I are doing what we are able and willing to do during our years of trying to become pregnant, and I have come to believe that without a doubt, all of this is happening because God wants the glory. He wants to display something marvelous, so He’s writing a dramatic story.
If you’re asking God “why are you allowing this sickness/infertility/trial” I’d encourage you to start with Jesus’ response to that man in the Bible story.
“Why? So that My works can be displayed in your life.”
And that, my friends, is enough.

After I wrote this post, my husband reminded me of the following: God is building things in us so that we can be strong enough to accomplish bigger things that God wants us to do. We grow in steps, by doing harder and harder things, then we can eventually do what we were designed for. Some of the tougher things later would crush us if we hadn’t gone through God’s preparation.
