Why Don’t You (Just) Do Infertility Treatments?

Have you ever been asked this question:

Why don’t you just do infertility treatments?

I was asked that question many times during our 7 year infertility journey. Every now and then I’m asked if we’d try fertility treatments for another baby.

Why don’t you just do infertility treatments? People might ask, or at least wonder, when someone they know is trying to conceive without success.

Ever just want to answer that question with questions of your own? Keep on reading…

Why don’t I just sit down to talk to a doctor about my most personal of personal details?

Why don’t I just get my private parts thoroughly examined? (A pap smear is nothing compared to the poking and prodding of a fertility clinic!)

Why don’t I spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars to let strangers stick a needle in my arm and an ultrasound wand inside me – several times in a month?

Why don’t I spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars for medications to assist my attempts at pregnancy?

Why don’t I just throw some hundred dollar bills out the window while I’m at it?

Why don’t I swallow or insert or inject myself with these pricey medications that make me even more hormonal?

Why don’t I fight with my health insurance company over the bills while I’m at it?

Why don’t I just spend lots of money, get way too comfortable wearing a paper gown, and tweak my hormones, month after month?

Why don’t I “just” do all of these things with zero guarantee that they will help me have a baby?

Why don’t I “just” go do some fertility treatments?

For seven long years we read and researched and prayed, we tried on our own, my husband and I discussed options, sought counsel, went to several doctors, evaluated finances… we wrestled with our fertility-related decisions. I would simply advise anyone struggling with infertility to prayerfully consider your options. Don’t rush. Don’t spend money you don’t have. Ask God for His wisdom and direction – He’ll provide it. Ask for His clear financial provision – He can handle it.

It was a slow journey to parenthood for us, and now we’re asking God for another baby. If you’re also in the midst of infertility, there is hope. My first five years of finding hope during infertility are chronicled in my book When Infertility Books Are Not Enough: Embracing Hope During Infertility. (Let me know if you’ve read it by sending me a message and leaving an Amazon review!) Subscribe to my mailing list below, because God-willing, another book will be coming soon.

PS: If anyone is wondering why we don’t “just adopt,” here are my thoughts on that.
