When God Doesn’t Fix It – Reviews of Infertility Books
Have you read When God Doesn’t Fix It: Lessons You Never Wanted to Learn, Truths You Can’t Live Without by Laura Story?
Recently I picked up this book after the title caught my attention and a friend recommended it. Written by Christian singer/songwriter Laura Story, whose song “Blessings” I had heard, this book describes how her husband seemed to be experiencing a strange illness, which ended up being a brain tumor. Once the tumor was removed, it left him with a brain injury affecting his everyday life.
I could relate to Laura as she shared about this situation and other real struggles of faith in God – learning to trust Him even when He doesn’t fix the problem or answer our prayers.
As a writer, I felt like this book could have flowed a little better, however as I read it on my Kindle, I found myself highlighting statement after statement that I will read again.
Although this book isn’t directly about infertility, it is part of this couple’s story. She writes that at one point God whispered to her heart, “If I called you to a life without children, would a loving marriage be enough?” That’s a tough question for those of us longing for children.
She also writes that during their struggle with infertility, she realized that “God was the only person who could create life, and he could do it in miraculous ways. I didn’t have to do anything. God was ultimately the one in control of the timing and the answer to my prayers and my pregnancy if that was his will. He was in charge, not me.”
I need to hear the stories of others who are grappling with unanswered prayers and choosing to trust God throughout the process – and this is a book that helped build my faith.
This story is one I could relate to well since the author and I have both wrestled with God’s goodness and struggling to know His goodness toward ME in the midst of unanswered prayers. As she wrestles she asks a question that we should all ponder:
“Am I going to let my circumstances determine my view of God, or am I going to let God determine how I view my circumstances?”
Another major point that I appreciated in this book is that God is the one writing our life’s stories. As I try to take over and write my own story at times, I need to be reminded that God is my Author. And despite how things may look, He has a good story to create in my life – even in the most difficult times. Laura reminds the reader that: “Trials are an opportunity. They are an invitation to do good works to glorify our Father in Heaven, to transform our lives from the inside out, and to drive us into the arms and footsteps of Jesus.”
If you’re facing any difficult situation medically, financially, relationally, or in any other way, I recommend that you read this book.
