Remember God by Annie Downs – Books for Those Who are Waiting

There was a time in my life when most of my closest girlfriends were married and having babies, and I was single and feeling hopeless about my dream of marriage and motherhood. Complicating my feelings was a message I received from others – the message that I shouldn’t be sad about it, and I should just focus on Jesus and focus on living my life. I cringed when I heard the line that was spoken or implied by others: “As soon as you are fully content in the Lord, He’ll send you your husband.” This is not true, and it’s also not true if people are telling you “as soon as you’re content without children, He’ll open your womb.” Yes, God might want you to grow in your love for Him and in your faith, but He’s not sitting there waiting for you to become perfectly content so He can give you your greatest heart’s desire.
I found very few resources to speak to my aching heart in that season. It was expected that I just “be content” when inside I was wrestling with God, knowing that He had given me the desires for marriage and motherhood, but it wasn’t happening. Since then I’ve discovered some books that have encouraged me – including one I read this spring.
Remember God by Annie F. Downs speaks to these very issues. She shares stories from her personal and professional life, and her inner wrestling focuses on her questions of God’s feelings toward her as her desires for marriage and motherhood go unmet.
Annie candidly writes about believing God, being full of faith and hope, and she shares the ways He speaks to her throughout her wait. Oh how I wish I’d had this book in that season of my life.
If you’re waiting and wrestling, wondering if and when God will answer your prayers for marriage and motherhood, get this book and let Annie’s writing speak encouragement to your heart!
