The Lucky Few – Reviews of Infertility Books

Although The Lucky Few is more of an adoption book than an infertility book, this couple’s journey to parenthood through adoption was birthed out of infertility. For example, like many struggling with infertility, Heather Avis had a hard time emotionally when she stepped into a church full of young families and pregnant bellies. I loved her comments, “One week, an associate pastor made a joke during announcements, saying there must be something in the water because so many women were expecting babies. I wanted to run up on the stage, punch him in the face, and then grab the mic and yell at everyone for being so insensitive and forgetting about me.” Raw, real, and relatable – that’s one reason I like this book! Yes, she “gets” infertility.

I enjoyed reading her story of how she and her husband became adoptive parents to three children, two of whom have Down syndrome. She shares how her heart became more like Christ through the refining fire of infertility, adoption, parenting children with health challenges, and simply through the challenges of parenting. If you’ve ever thought about adoption during your infertility journey, I recommend this book. If you know someone who has adopted, or if you know someone who has adopted a child with Down syndrome, then read this book.

Heather Avis writes with wisdom. From her perspective as an adoptive mother, she writes, “But if I could, I would go back in time and talk to my twenty-four-year-old self, I would tell her to stop praying to get pregnant and to start asking God for a heart that beats like His.” That’s some good food for thought, friends.

One more wise statement I am pondering from this book is this: “Just because circumstances are hard, it doesn’t mean they’re bad.”

Wow! How often have I described recent years in my life as being hard or difficult. In these years I have seen the goodness of the Lord as well – so yes, just because it’s hard doesn’t mean it’s bad.

Go grab a copy of this book, either the e-book or paperback – it’s worth your time!

Hi, I’m Betsy, and I live in the Washington, D.C. area with my husband, Mike. We have been married since 2008. We enjoyheadshot-betsy-herman exploring new cities together on foot, eating at our favorite Italian restaurants, and doing life as a team.

I published my first book Embracing Hope During Infertility in January 2015, and my second Seasons: A Picture Book was published in November 2016. Although this book is intended for children, if you’re still in a barren season like I am, I think that Seasons will encourage you with a glimpse of God’s goodness.

Wow.. excellent thoughts to ponder. My kids like to check video series out of our public library called signing time. This amazing mom who does these dvds has a deaf daughter and a daughter with cerebral palsy. She sings an amazing song at the end that is addressed to her husband about their struggle with children with handicaps. I love the line saying “maybe we won’t find easy, but baby, we’ve found the good…” just because something is difficult doesn’t mean it isn’t good! Thanks for sharing…
