Your Infertility Diagnosis Can Fuel Your Prayers

I called my husband with tears in my eyes after hanging up the phone call with the nurse. She had just informed me that my latest bloodwork indicated that my ovarian reserve was declining. Unfortunately, science is indicating that my eggs are starting to decline.

My husband reassured me, as he regularly does, that God knows what He’s doing, and that He can still bring about a pregnancy even with aging eggs. He reminded me to keep praying, and to pray about this specifically.

I realized that nothing says “God, help!” like a situation that is beginning to look hopeless.

I also realized that at 36 years old, likely having ovulated for more than 20 years, it’s not surprising that my egg supply is becoming depleted.

It just so happened – because of God’s amazing timing – that I received this discouraging news within days of seeing an old friend who had once been told by doctors that she would not get pregnant without a donor egg. Just before beginning In-Vitro Fertilization, she became pregnant all-naturally and became a first-time mama in her early forties.

Seeing her smart and healthy young child reminded me that God is able to do what science and medicine say are impossible.

God isn’t the least bit stressed out by what science has to say about our eggs.

In fact, He created our bodies, and He doesn’t look at our diagnosis and feel all sad and depressed and hopeless, like many of us do.

He really can do anything. He’s the God of miracles, the giver of miracle babies, the One who gave new life to old ladies in the Bible, the One who can do miracles for you and for me.

Since He is able, the best thing we can do when we hear bad news from our doctor is pray. Yes, we can make healthy lifestyle changes, and yes, we can seek medical treatment if that’s the direction God is leading us. (If it’s an urgent medical situation, definitely seek medical care!)

We should turn to God with our emotions (God, I feel sad about this), our requests (God, we really want to have a baby soon), and our circumstances (God, this medical test says I might not be able to have a baby, but I believe that You are able to make it happen).

God is able. He wants to draw our hearts toward His own in this process. So let us take the bad news from the doctor and bring it before our Creator, letting our diagnosis help fuel our prayers to the One who makes all things new.
