Fertility Foods
In the past decade, especially in the past few years that we’ve been trying to conceive, I’ve taken a greater interest in nutrition and done some reading on the best fertility foods. The overall advice I’ve taken away from the books and articles I’ve read involve focusing on the healthy stuff: eat fruits and veggies along with lean meats and eggs. Avoid processed foods, too much sugar, alcohol and caffeine. (I’ll confess, I asked my fertility specialist for her opinion on caffeine while TTC and she said that some caffeine is okay. Many articles will tell you something different, but the bottom line, in my opinion, is that too much of anything is not a good idea!) Drink plenty of water. Take a prenatal vitamin with folic acid.
Here are some resources you can check out for more tips on eating the best fertility foods:
- This article from Harvard Health Publications does a nice job of summarizing the book The Fertility Diet (which I have checked out from the library at least twice!): www.health.harvard.edu/newsletters/Harvard_Mental_Health_Letter/2009/May/Follow-Fertility-Diet
- Here’s an article about five helpful foods for fertility – including one of my favorite suggestions – full-fat dairy products! These ideas can help both men and women boost their fertility: abcnews.go.com/Health/Wellness/foods-boost-fertility/story?id=23139887#.
- One more great article on fertility foods can be found over at the What to Expect website: www.whattoexpect.com/preconception/fertility-foods.aspx
I’ve found that eating more nutritious foods and foods that enhance fertility is a process. I might not be able to change all of my eating habits overnight, but I hope to continue taking steps in that direction. So join me in embracing a balanced diet of whole foods, healthy fats, and delicious dairy.
