Far More Children

“Sing, barren woman,
who has never had a baby.

Fill the air with song,
you who’ve never experienced childbirth!
You’re ending up with far more children
than all those childbearing women.”
From Isaiah 54, The Message
If you had seen me at the National Zoo a couple of weeks ago, you might have thought that I was a mom of five children. After all, the school groups are often identifiable with their matching shirts, many kids all the same age, and youthful (or weary) looking teachers. There I was, a thirty-something woman, looking at reptiles and panda bears with 5 kids.
Quite the contrast is my reality – my body was taunting me “haha, you’re not pregnant this month!” even though my life was full of children in that moment. I had 3 of the 4 children I nanny with me that day, plus a young teen from out of state who was visiting. When I had run into a friend days before and realized that her kids could use an outing and she could use a break, I picked up one of her children for the day as well. Five children from three families made for a fun day at the zoo.
Despite my longing for motherhood that is not quite happening yet, my mind singohcame back to this passage put so bluntly in The Message. “You’re ending up with far more children than all those childbearing women.” Five children who are not mine to keep, but with whom I got to eat a picnic, children with whom I could watch sad-looking monkeys and snake-necked-turtles with. And I must admit, they were good company to get lost driving through DC with.
On the way home somebody asked, “How many kids have you babysat, Ms. Betsy?”
“More than I can count.”
I’ve been a babysitter or nanny for 25 years. Some children I cared for only once or twice, some I spent many hours with over the course of many years. I’ve kept in touch with many, and am watching some via Facebook as they grow up and have their own children!
I’m not giving up on the hope of being Mom one day, but for now, in a sense, I have many children.
So SING, oh barren woman!
What is your barrenness? In what area of life do you feel a lack? That’s a good place to start singing, or to start living with joy! Like Habakkuk 3 describes – although we lack this and this and this, I will rejoice! In those empty places you can SING, or show love to someone, or take 5 kids to the zoo, knowing that God knows what He’s doing, and He’s determining the steps of your life based on the big picture of the past, present, and future. And He’s good.
