Jesus Said YES!
I want to tell you a story.
In June 2017 I had a conversation with the 4-year-old I nanny. He was wondering why my family consists of just Mike and me. We talked about how God hasn’t given us children yet.
“Why does Jesus say no?” he asked me.
“I don’t know, child, I just don’t know why Jesus has said no, but we hope that one day He says yes.”
June marked seven years in which we had hoped, prayed, and tried to start our family. Month after month, I had looked at negative single lines on pregnancy tests, heartbroken yet pressing onward.
I climbed out of bed one July morning, a day before I expected my cycle to start again, expecting to not be pregnant. Despite my low expectations, a tiny glimmer of hope and faith prompted me to take a pregnancy test anyway, like I have countless times in the past seven years.
For reasons I can only attribute to God’s prompting, I grabbed a digital pregnancy test out of my stash instead of the usual cheap strip with lines. I glanced at the directions, quickly determined I did not need to connect it to my phone via Bluetooth (ain’t got time for that!), then dipped the pregnancy test into the pee cup before walking into my kitchen. Returning to the bathroom a few minutes later, prepared to glance at the stick and toss it into the trash, I was shocked and forever changed by one little word. YES.
My pregnancy test said YES! After nearly one hundred failed attempts, after all those tests with no second line, the first indication that I was pregnant was the word YES!
Like any woman recovering from years of infertility and feeling shocked by that YES, I ripped open the packaging of the other tests I found in my cabinet, in the drawer, and in a travel bag, and I took three more tests immediately. They all indicated pregnancy – another digital said YES, the strips each showed a faint line.
I will share more of this story in days to come, but today I want to say that YES, regardless of the odds against us, the promises of God are yes and amen. God can say YES to your prayers when He determines that it’s time.
- Even after 7 years of no pregnancies.
- Even after the fertility specialist gently broke the news that, due to my age (37 now) and our history of not being able to get pregnant, he thought we had less than 1% chance of conceiving on our own.
- Even though we’re older than we expected to be when starting a family.
- Even though my faith was dim that month, the hope-filled habit of taking a pregnancy test gave me some of the best news in my life.
All of God’s promises are YES and AMEN. (So be it!) Nothing is impossible for God. Nothing is too hard for our God. When He says “it’s time” He doesn’t need fertility drugs or any extra assistance (although He can use them, He chose not to in our situation). He is the Creator of life and He can do it!
Today we are rejoicing because Jesus said YES! At the time of this post, I’m nearly 10 weeks pregnant, and in awe of this miracle that God has done in my body.
Please pray for us, that God will finish what He started, that our healthy baby will be born around the first week of April. We share this story because it’s God’s story, and He’s the one deserving all the glory!
I encourage you to read my first book Embracing Hope During Infertility. Written four years into our seven year journey, I wrote it from the perspective of a woman still waiting for a baby, with the faith that Jesus could still say YES. (You can find Kindle and paperback copies on Amazon, or paperbacks can be purchased through Barnes & Noble or other major online booksellers.)
If you’re still dealing with the disappointment of infertility, and this post makes you cry tears of sadness or frustration, I want you to know that I understand. I’ve shed many tears at other people’s pregnancy announcements. However, I hope that you will allow this story that God is writing in our lives to encourage you, knowing that He can do anything. I will be sharing more of my story in the weeks ahead, then I plan to continue writing Hope During Infertility posts for those who are still waiting for their YES. Posts focused on pregnancy after infertility and my new life as a new mom will primarily be on my other blog www.lovethatbetsy.com. I invite you to follow me on Facebook: for infertility-related posts on my Hope During Infertility Facebook page and my other writings and posts will be on my Betsy Herman, Writer Facebook page.
